Sashiko

Sashiko is a traditionally Japanese decorative repair technique, originating in the Edo period. The different types of stitching reinforce and strengthen the garment as well as add a visually interesting pattern.

These are repairs I made to a coat that was falling apart. It is far more common for us to get rid of clothing that is in disrepair, but this was not a luxury that was available to people before the clothing industry became widely commercialized. Finding a way to hold onto our items longer reduces our waste impact on the planet and this type of repair adds an element of newness to the garment.
